2nd Grade Overview- January

Reading

  • Unit: Live & Learn:

    • Use questioning and author's purpose to answer, "How can people help out in their community?"
    • Read nonfiction texts about wild weather (ex: tornados) to answer, "How does weather affect us?"
    • Learn how to evaluate an author and his/her text to determine importance.
    • Describe the main idea vs. details in a text
  • Start New Unit 4: Our Life/Our World to answer, "What can we learn from our world?"

Writing

  • Generating ideas from family stories, important events, and past memories

  • Choosing one special idea and writing first draft

  • Edit & Review draft

  • Publish Final Draft of Personal Narrative

  • (Look out for another invitation to our 2nd Publishing Party in the classroom!)

Math

  • Finish Unit 5: Computation & Measurement Unit

  • Unit 6: Time "Students will tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes, using A.M. and P.M.

  • Review past three units for Quarter 2 Assessment at end of January

Science

  • Review & test on Solar System chapter: "What are some ways the Earth moves?"

  • Start new chapter on Severe Weather (ex: tornado, hurricane, lightning, blizzard)

Wed 1/7 - Thurs 1/8 = SRI Testing Grades 2-6

Mon 1/12 = K Field Trip: Owens Science Center; ACCESS Testing Begins

Tues 1/13 = 6th Grade In-House Field Trip: Mt. Ranier Nature Center

Wed 1/14 = PTO Meeting @ 6:30pm

Mon 1/19 = MLK Holiday- NO SCHOOL

Tues 1/20 - Wed 1/21 = Grades 3-6 Quarterly Benchmark Test

Fri 1/23 = End of Quarter 2

Mon 1/26 = Teacher Planning/Grading Day = NO SCHOOL

Wed 1/28 - Thurs 1/29 = 5th Grade Science FAST
