Dear Family Member: This week our class will focus on the ways people can help their community. We will also talk about how people solve common problems in their communities. Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we’ll be practicing.
Word Workout
Words to Know: synonyms You and your child will make up a story about someone who solves a problem in a town. You will develop the story by taking turns using the list words in sentences.
Spelling/Phonics: long o You will pick a word from the list, you and your child will pronounce the word, and you will write the word on a piece of paper. Your child will find a list word that has the same spelling of the long o vowel sound. This week’s words contain the phonic sound of long o, spelled o, oa, ow, andoe.
Comprehension: author’s purpose
Your child will look at each set of illustrations to be used in a book. Then he or she will think about what the author’s purpose is for writing the book. Your child can suggest a variety of author’s purposes based on the pictures.

Comprensión: Propósito del autor
